ZFSL OBERHAUSEN
CONVERSION OF A DEPARTMENT STORE

Germany

Oberhausen shows how educational buildings can be integrated into the city centre and cleverly connected with other urban uses. The demand for all-day care creates new meeting spaces and thus revitalises city centres. The example should also serve as a model for future educational projects in other municipalities.

This requires process facilitators with expertise in building in existing buildings and in pedagogical interior architecture.

In Oberhausen, a former retail property in the pedestrian area was converted into the ‘Centre for Practical Teacher Training’.
Open-plan layouts and flexible rooms encourage independent learning and creative dialogue. In addition to traditional seminar rooms, open-plan areas provide space for collaboration and the use of new media.
